Flaherty visits Japan to strengthen economic ties and create jobs and growth

The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, met with high-level officials and business leaders in Tokyo to improve trade and business relations between Canada and Japan, helping to create new jobs and economic growth for Canadians.

“Canada and Japan share a long and very special relationship, and we are working toward a future that is mutually beneficial to both countries,” said Minister Flaherty. “As G-7 and G-20 partners, we have continually honored our obligation to provide the leadership necessary to set the global economy on a path to sustainable recovery—even when, in Japan’s case, it has had to simultaneously deal with catastrophic challenges that tested the true and courageous mettle of its extraordinary people and country.”

Speaking to senior executives, media and government officials at the Canadian embassy in Tokyo, Minister Flaherty provided an overview of the state of the global economy and the actions agreed to at recent meetings of the G-20 and leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

The Minister also described Canada and Japan’s healthy business and trading relationship, and he looks forward to the early conclusion of a Joint Study on the feasibility of an Economic Partnership Agreement. Japan is Canada’s fifth largest merchandise trading partner and the largest bilateral foreign direct investment partner in Asia.

“Such economic ties have formed a cornerstone of the Canada-Japan relationship,” said Minister Flaherty. “The trade relationship between our two countries is one of Canada’s most important. I can also state confidently that, in Canada, you have a valued partner of your own.”
